Vitamin D and Heart HealthVitamin D and Heart Health

I’ve been writing about vitamin d and how important it is to get the proper amount of this vitamin to maintain a healthy skeletal system. Well a new study conducted by the Heart Institute at Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City suggests that “Vitamin D contributes to a strong and healthy heart as well – and that inadequate levels of the vitamin may significantly increase a person’s risk of stroke, heart disease, and death, even among people who’ve never had heart disease.”

This study has been going on for more than a year, and was conducted on “27,686 patients who were 50 years of age or older with no prior history of cardiovascular disease.” The participants within this study all had routine blood tests to check for vitamin d. There were three different groups created – “normal (over 30 nanograms per milliliter), low (15-30 ng/ml), or very low (less than 15 ng/ml)” – where participants were placed according to their individual results.

“Researchers found that patients with very low levels of Vitamin D were 77 percent more likely to die, 45 percent more likely to develop coronary artery disease, and 78 percent were more likely to have a stroke than patients with normal levels. Patients with very low levels of Vitamin D were also twice as likely to develop heart failure than those with normal Vitamin D levels.”

Previously, medical experts said that vitamin D supplementation should be taken, and/or increased to help promote bone health and ward off diseases like osteoporosis. However, since the new study that was presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Conference on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009 in Orlando, Florida, you may see a shift in the way medical professionals will look at vitamin d.

I’m not suggesting that you run out and purchase an exorbitant amount of vitamin d, but what I am suggesting, is that you take another look at vitamin d and heart health, by asking your doctor if it really is as important as this new study suggests. I’m not a medical professional, nor do I suggest that I am, however, when I read article regarding health and wellness, I do a little more investigating.

Our health is nothing to take for granted. As we all know, the healthcare industry has enough struggles of its own. If we can do our own research, listen to our primary care professional, and take every preventable measure to ensure that we get the proper vitamins and nutrients each and every day, we will be doing our part to improving not only the healthcare industry, but also our health.

Vitamin D has always been known as the sunshine vitamin, but many of us do not get enough sunshine to get the recommended requirements of this all important vitamin. So, as winter approaches in the northern hemisphere, may I suggest introducing vitamin d into your diet.

Most vitamin D supplements provide, five forms of chelated calcium, over 20 bone-fortifying vitamins and minerals, 100% RDI of Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc and Vitamin D, and Chlorophyll-coated tablets that protect valuable nutrients, time-releasing optimal absorption. Vitamin D supplements are also absorbable so you can get the nutrition you need for healthier bones.

According to TriVita®, “the key to bone health is calcium and Vitamin D. These are the two essential ingredients that will help you maintain the strength of your skeletal system, ensure regular cellular activity, proper cardiac function, and preserve the health of other vital body systems.”

TriVita® has known for some time about vitamin d and its affect on the heart, as you can see by the quote above. The study listed further above backs up what TriVita® has been advocating for some time.

New Vitamin SupplementNew Vitamin Supplement

There’s a new multi-nutrient complex daily vitamin supplement that’s more powerful than you average nutritional supplement. Read the following article to learn more about this new vitamin supplement.

According to TriVita’s Chief Science Officer, “We need a multiple nutrient supplement every day to serve as a foundation for health and to combat the nutrient demands of a stressful life.” And that’s exactly why TriVita has created this new and more powerful nutritional supplement.

Below is information on Wellavoh™, the new super-nutritional supplement. The information is provided by TriVita’s weekly health and wellness report.

How Nutrients Help Relieve Stress
Stress is defined as change that is seen by your body or mind as a threat – large or small, imaginary or real – or a change in your environment that triggers a rapid use of your reserves. Stress creates a demand on your resources. Soon, these resources become exhausted and you get sick.

Distress can come from your environment, your body or your mind. Rather than being just a single event, stress accumulates over time from all three sources. It strangles the joy and pleasure from your days and nights. It makes you miserable, and then it makes you sick. Once you are sick, stress keeps you from responding as well to medical care. Yes, stress is a killer!

Nutrients to the rescue
The opposite of stress is homeostasis. So, while stress is constantly trying to pull you apart, homeostasis is constantly working to put you back together. Homeostasis is the priority process your body uses to combat stress.

Vitamins, minerals and other nutrients are essential for homeostasis. If we have the nutrients we need at the moment we need them, we will thrive! Conversely, if we do not have the proper nutrient base in our system every day we will suffer loss of energy, poor mental performance and an increased risk for disease.

The word supplement means an addition to something to make up for a deficiency. All supplements are an important addition to a healthy diet. They make up for the deficiency we face because of poor nutrient density in our foods. They also help out when we miss the mark of diet perfection.

Supplements are no substitute for good dietary choices. We simply must commit ourselves to eating a healthy diet. As you review your food choices for the past week, ask yourself, “Did I eat the right amount of fruits and vegetables every day?”

  • 5 servings for children
  • 7 servings for women
  • 9 servings for men

If you can say “yes” – congratulations! If you are like most people you did not reach that goal. And, if you are like most of us, you did not eat all of your fruits and vegetables from an organic source; so, the fruits and vegetables may have been of low nutrient value.

We need a multiple nutrient supplement every day to serve as a foundation for health and to combat the nutrient demands of a stressful life.

A new supplement
Staying on top of our nutrient reserve is important. Our body makes millions of new cells every day – heart cells, brain cells, bone and blood cells. Stress kills millions of vulnerable cells every day. Every time a cell dies it should be replaced. If you do not have the right amount of nutrients to construct a new cell, you will either make an incomplete cell or none at all. The outcome is bad in either case; so, we really need to keep all nutrients on board at all times. This is why we created Sonoran Bloom™ Wellavoh™ (wel-lah voh), a new multi-nutrient complex for men and women.

The destructive forces of stress come from inside and outside your body. The nutrient complexes of Wellavoh can help you build a bulwark against stress as it tries to pull you apart. Wellavoh supports homeostasis as the innate wisdom of your body tries to keep you functioning at your peak.

One more reason…
Perhaps an even more important reason exists for maintaining a robust supply of nutrients in our system daily. According to a recent report, chemical switches on our DNA are activated by nutrients. If a single nutrient is missing at the critical moment it is needed, one of these chemical switches will fail. This results in a change in our DNA that promotes disease – for up to three generations of our children! So, it is vital that we and our children have our nutrients available every day to reduce the impact of stress while promoting vitality today, health tomorrow and a solid wellness foundation for generations to come!

Vitamin DVitamin D

Vitamin D is a powerful inhibitor of cancer development and growth – and vitamin D is produced almost entirely by exposure to the sun. It’s been noted that just 30 minutes of direct sunlight produces up to 50,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D.

In the 1970s and ’80s, the medical establishment, led by dermatologists, sounded an alarm over the rising number of malignant melanomas in the United States. Since doctors believed that most skin cancers were the result of too much exposure to UVB rays from the sun, they launched a campaign to persuade people to use sun blockers and stay out of the sun.

This campaign caused more problems than it corrected. Skin cancer is also caused by UVA rays, which most sun blocks don’t block, and since the sun was considered the main source of vitamin D, many people became vitamin D deficient. Thus, by making people vitamin D deficient, they inadvertently increased people’s risk of developing all forms of skin cancer, including the deadly malignant melanoma.

That’s only part of the problem when it comes to vitamin D deficiency. Recent research has revealed that vitamin D deficiency also contributes to serious neurological and brain disorders, including autism, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s.

Dr. Russell Blaylock, a M.D., a board-certified neurosurgeon, and a practicing physician for more than 30 years, has created an important report that explains the importance of vitamin D, and what most of the medical experts are not telling you. I’ve read some of Dr. Blaylock’s report, and the information he provides will change the way you view your doctor’s agenda.

Vitamin D is a very complex substance. For more than half a century vitamin D was thought only to mineralize bones. But recent studies, according to Dr. Blaylock’s report, indicate that it does much more:

  • Regulates calcium in all cells (especially brain cells)
  • Protects the immune system
  • Regulates cell growth and cell death
  • Provides antioxidant and antiviral benefits

Dr. Blaylock also says, “we now know that vitamin D deficiency is very common in the elderly. This makes sense because so many are house-bound and avoid sun exposure.”

Since many of us do not get enough sunlight exposure, we need to take a daily vitamin D supplement. This vitamin is too important to the health of your body to ignore.

TriVita’s® Vitamin D, is my choice for vitamin D. It provides, five forms of chelated calcium, over 20 bone-fortifying vitamins and minerals, 100% RDI of Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc and Vitamin D, and Chlorophyll-coated tablets that protect valuable nutrients, time-releasing optimal absorption. TriVita’s Vitamin D is also absorbable so you can get the nutrition you need for healthier bones.

Vitamin B-12Vitamin B-12

There are many vitamin b-12 supplements on the market, and people always wonder which supplement is right for them. I read in a wellness article how to determine which B12 vitamin is the best for you.

In order to keep the integrity of the author’s answer, I’ve decided to post the majority of the answer below. The title of the article was Need for Vitamin B-12.

Start of Article: Vitamin B-12 is an essential nutrient: You cannot thrive without it. You need Vitamin B-12 to make healthy blood, healthy nerves and a healthy brain. Vitamin B-12 insufficiency is implicated in a number of common conditions: from allergies and ADHD to bipolar disorder and Alzheimer’s disease. Along with iron and Vitamin C, Vitamin B-12 is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies among seniors. You may actually be protected from a shrinking brain with healthy levels of Vitamin B-12.

There are three ways of looking at “need” in Vitamin B-12:

  1. Disease. If your blood levels are low in B-12 you may be diagnosed with a medical condition called pernicious anemia. This is a serious health condition that is often caused by the inability to properly absorb B-12.
  2. Complete B-12 metabolism. Is the B-12 you are taking doing what it is supposed to do? If so, your homocysteine levels will be low. If not, your homocysteine levels will be high – even though your blood levels of B-12 are also high. B-12 along with folate, Vitamin B-6 and biotin are still needed as long as homocysteine levels are too high.
  3. How you feel. Are you mentally sluggish? Do you feel better when you take B-12? If so, you can continue to take B-12 simply to feel better because there is no toxicity associated with taking B-12.

Types of B-12

Vitamin B-12 is made from the mineral cobalt by beneficial bacterial in the soil and inside living organisms. When scientists make Vitamin B-12 for use in supplements, it is done in the same way. The “parent” form of B-12 is cyanocobalamine (cyan- means blue: the color of cobalt). Cyanocobalamine nourishes your entire body, and your liver uses cyanocobalamine to make other forms of Vitamin B-12. One of the major “children” of cyanocobalamine is methylcobalamine. Methyl-B12 is used in detoxification, especially homocysteine detoxification.

There are many other types of B-12. However, as long as you have cyanocobalamine, your body will make the other types as it needs them. The exception to this rule occurs when a person has been poisoned with toxins such as mercury and lead or when a genetic imbalance prevents them from completely converting B-12.

The type of B-12 for you

Most people over 30 need to take a B-12 supplement. The only certain way to get B-12 into your system quickly (besides injecting it) is to absorb it sublingually, under your tongue. Even people under 30 may take B-12 if they feel stressed, suffer from allergies or asthma, are sad, blue or tired. Vitamin B-12 is also helpful in people with ADHD and other nervous disorders – not as a medical treatment, but as a support for healthy blood, nerves and brain.

A sublingual B-12 is awesome in these circumstances. Or you may want to step up to a super sublingual B-12 which is faster-acting and longer-lasting – with three times the Vitamin B-12. If your homocysteine levels are high, or if you have a family history of heart attack, stroke, osteoporosis, or Alzheimer’s disease, HCY Guard may be best for you.

This should help you see the need for Vitamin B-12 as well as give you the tools you need to decide which one(s) you need!

One thing you can do, is take control of your health. It’s something you can decide to do. It’s your decision! End of Article.

According to the article, you should use Sublingual B-12 or Super Sublingual B-12 if:

  • You are over 30
  • You have any type of digestion issue
  • You have low energy
  • You have poor moods
  • You need to improve your memory

And he suggests that you should use HCY Guard if:

  • You have elevated levels of homocysteine
  • You are exposed to environmental toxins
  • You have low kidney function
  • You need detoxification

Vitamin DVitamin D

Vitamin D is found in many dietary sources such as fish, eggs, fortified milk, and cod liver oil. The sun also contributes significantly to the daily production of vitamin D, and as little as 10 minutes of exposure is thought to be enough to prevent deficiencies.

The major biologic function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium, helping to form and maintain strong bones. Recently, research also suggests vitamin D may provide protection from osteoporosis, hypertension (high blood pressure), cancer, and several autoimmune diseases.[1]

In a recent study, a team of European researchers has demonstrated that higher levels of vitamin D are associated with improved cognitive function in middle-aged and older men.

The study compared the cognitive performance of more than 3,000 men aged 40 to 79 years, and found that those with higher levels of vitamin D performed consistently better in a test that assesses an individual’s attention and speed of information processing.

The experiment took into account factors such as depression, season and levels of physical activity.

“Previous studies exploring the relationship … produced inconsistent findings, but we observed a significant, independent association between a slower information processing speed and lower levels of vitamin D,” says lead author Dr. David Lee from the University of Manchester School of Translational Medicine.[2]

Since vitamin D is primarily synthesized in the skin following sun exposure, and not many people get enough exposure to sunlight on a daily basis, and because of our fast paced lifestyle, nutritional supplements may be the best means to receive this all important vitamin.

Some of the better vitamin D supplements on the market provide multiple forms of chelated calcium, bone-fortifying vitamins and minerals, 100% RDI of Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc and Vitamin D, within Chlorophyll-coated tablets that protect the valuable nutrients, and which are time-releasing for optimal absorption.

The life expectancy of people has increased considerably during the last 50 years. To make sure that your senior years are lively ones it’s imperative that you lead a healthy lifestyle through a balanced nutritional diet. It’s also vital to get enough sleep and exercise on a regular basis. Taking nutritional supplements plays an important role in reducing the risk of disease as well as supplying the body with anti-aging nutrition, improving its energy and health.

Finding the proper vitamin supplements that fits your needs can be difficult. Not all vitamin supplements are the same. For example, all-in-one or one-a-day type vitamin supplements are not the best source of vitamins and minerals. They cram all the required vitamins and minerals into just one small tablet. In all reality, it’s a great marketing concept, but a waste of time and money.

It’s imperative to be aware of the fact that the nutritional requirements of men and women does differ from one another. Be sure to find out which vitamin supplements are right for your sex. It’s been stated by several nutrition experts that women 30 years and older need to take supplements containing nutrients that help stabilize the female hormones, whereas men ideally need nutrients that benefit prostate health. Whether male of female, you will not find the proper nutrients in an all inclusive multiple vitamin.

To ensure that you’re taking the proper vitamin supplements it’s wise to seek the advice of a nutritional expert. If you do not know one, surf the Internet in the area of nutrition, or nutritional supplements. There are plenty of web sites that offer great products and free advice about what vitamin supplements your should be taking. Make sure you research the pros and cons of any vitamin supplements before spending your hard earned money.
